T'ai Chi Ch'uan is a martial art! And although you may not be learning or training in it as a martial art, with East Winds, you will certainly be made aware and
indeed learn some of the 5 aspects of
T'ai Chi Ch'uan. These are -

  • The empty hand form
  • Pushing hands
  • Self defence
  • Weapons
  • Developing inner strength
tai
The forms you will learn with East Winds are all based on Traditional Yang Family T'ai Chi Ch'uan. You will start with a very short 6 posture form, which is used to introduce you to the main principles of Taiji. It concentrates on developing good posture, correct movement as well as grounding, and explains and demonstrates the main energies used in Taiji. After you have reached a certain proficiency with these 6 postures, you will move on to learn one of the complete forms. This will either be the 24 step Posture Simplified (Peking) form or the Traditional Yang Family Taijiquan. tai As part of your training with East Winds, you will have the opportunity of learning some static and moving posture Qigong (Chi Kung) exercises. Literally translated, Qigong means energy work. You will also learn one or more of the Qigong forms known as Zhang Zhuang (Jan Jong), the Harmony of the Five Elements, Ba Duan Jin (the Eight Pieces of Brocade) and T'ai Chi C'hi (Tai Chi Ruler). Later you will learn some push hands, an exercise used to develop rooting, sensitivity, balance and co-ordination. It is said "Taiji is used to know yourself, push hands is used to know others".
You will also (in separate classes and practice sessions) have the opportunity of learning some applications and do some weapons training.
